Hi, I am Sig (junge1),
I was born in Dominikus- Krankenhaus in Berlin-Hermsdorf, Bezirk Reinickendorf in December 1939. Bezirk Reinickendorf was one of 20 Bezirke that made up Gross-Berlin before World War II and one of 12 Bezirke that made up former West-Berlin, the other 8 Bezirke were Russian occupied and became East-Berlin after the war. Moved from Berlin to Neurohlau (Nova Role) Sudetenland (now Czech Republic), in August 1943 (our entire block of apartment buildings was bombed out in November 1943) and returned back to Berlin in November 1945. Saw my dad the first time in my life in August/September 1946 after he returned from POW camp. Attended elementary school in Berlin-Waidmannslust, high school in Berlin-Hermsdorf, and trade school in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Was an apprentice for the trade of Klischeeaetzer (photo engraver) at Burrath & Schmidt on Friedrichstrasse between U-Bahnhof Kochstrasse (near to what later became Checkpoint Charlie) and Hallisches Tor.
While watching Allied planes supplying West-Berlin by air during the Berliner Luftbruecke in 1948-49 I developed my love for aircraft. I guess I could be considered a 'Berliner Grosschnauze", or at least I used to be.
'Wanderlust' led me to leave Berlin in summer 1960 to emigrate to Toronto, Canada and in February 1962 to move from Canada to New York City, NY, USA. In January 1963 I joined the United States Air Force, one step ahead of Uncle Sam drafting me. Became a United States citizen within 7 weeks after it became a security issue because of my military career. One day after I was sworn in as a citizen in Seattle, my entire unit left for Southeast Asia in June 1966. After nearly 5 years of active duty (extended 11 months to make it an 18 months overseas deployment) I got discharged and moved to New York City. In 1973 I moved to Phoenix, Arizona and two years later joined the Arizona Air National Guard.
Received my higher education at Arizona State University and the University of Georgia and worked for 22 years for the Arizona Department of Water Resources in various capacities. Upon military retirement in 1999 and State retirement in 2005 I looked at a number of things to keep me occupied. Traveling and joining 'renderosity' in September 2007 were a couple of them,
Sig..

Outstanding Sig. You've portrayed the atmosphere extremely well...in both your image and your words. So well that I am now looking over my shoulder and holding onto my wallet too. lol. Looking at all the faces of the crowd...only the little baby peaking over her mother's shoulder seems to be looking at you. If you take a picture like this in most cities in the US...several people are going to be staring at you. These folks seem to be at ease with themselves and their surroundings.

I know it was a chance shot, but wow ... the composition is fantastic! So many elements, yet it blends into a wonderful whole. The two women on the left are framed by the car. The group of people standing on the right are echoed by the shape of the trolly, which is in turn echoed by the shape of the buildings. People/windows/windows/balustrades ... all nice, chunky verticals. I love it that nobody is standing on the metal access covers in the sidewalk, and that those shapes are complimented by the shape of the table. The rounded corner of the large metal cover is the same as the rounded corner of the awning on the building on the right, which makes me think the slight curve I see in the curb goes all the way around the corner. The woman in the brilliant orange tank top carries a hot pink bag, which matches the color of the woman with the baby in the hot pink top carrying another large bag, standing next to another woman with a large bag, and the bags form a diagonal across the frame. There's a person on the far right in plaid brown/blue/white shorts, which refers over to the girl on the left in the butterflied brown/blue/white shirt. A woman on the trolly wears a dresss in a similar color to a bag carried by a small child, and those elements are connected not only by their color, but by their visual size, distorted by distance. The walls of the building in the background are two sections of blue and one of pale yellow, and there are two pedestrians, one in a blue shirt and one in light blue jeans, and one man in a pale yellow shirt, and they're standing in the same order as the color on the building. Left to right, blue-blue-yellow. In that group of people there are no others wearing those colors. If you had planned this shot, you would not have been able to come up with as many visual cross-references as you actually got here! I'm sure I'm missing some ... I only reported the ones that were obvious upon looking at the photograph. It's a way of SEEING the environment. You asked me yesterday on the telephone if I was tired of your Rio shots yet. I'll tell you again ... NO! Bring 'em on! They're all fascinating, and I'm loving looking at them. This might be your best yet, but I'm willing to look at another dozen or so just to be sure. :) You might wonder what I would see in a building, how I would shoot it, but you have a natural "eye," and your artistic intuition is spot on. I would never think to shoot the things you do. I've taken some city shots, and now you make me think I should go back and look at them again to see if I got anything good! Do you ever look at Corey's work? (He's CoreyBlack here on RR.) He's got shots of Chicago that make me think of this image from you of a Rio street corner (and some great car pics). You might enjoy his gallery ... check it out when you've got a few spare minutes between washing the cars and cleaning the house! LOL! (Of course I've probably taken an hour of your time with this comment, so I'll shut up now!)

WOW! Thanks Tara!!! I didn't know I had all this in this picture, but believe me, it is all by chance. You are probably right that I couldn't have done it like this if I had wanted to to. But after your extensive comment, you have made my day! If I were in school and the instructor or professor would make a comment like this over something I produced, I would be glowing all the way home lol! There are a couple of things in my mind when I take a picture whether I am conscious of it or not, framing and naturalness. I like to take pictures of people the way they are, the way I see them, not the way they like to be seen, or think I like to see them. That means no posing. It may sometimes appear to be sneaky, but often that's the way I get the best pictures. Lastly, no you didn't take up an hour to read your comment, just 10 minutes - and another 10 minutes for this answer lol. I will look at CoreyBlack's site. Thanks again Tara. Have a nice weekend, Sig..
