Description

Monday, 2011-08-01, 16:30 Well, here we see mom in front, dad behind, and below is baby! Just an appreciation of the different sizes of digging machines used in the construction. "Baby" is scarcely higher than a man. The other two are huge, especially "dad". The rock and dirt in the background is now being eaten away and more reinforced concrete is being poured. The entire city block will be excavated and a huge reinforced concrete base will be poured. My previous posts have shown only a small portion of the area to be excavated and reinforced with the platfom. I'll post more photos as things progress. I spoke top one of the workers - he's from Ireland. A very nice and jolly fellow. He told me the fellows constructing the reinforcing iron rod structures and doing the concrete work are all Irish, while the machine operators (cranes, cement trucks and pumps) are all Swedes. Common language is English. Makes for jobs for the Irish in the European Union, but I wonder how many Swedes are out of a job due to the European Union internationalization? On the other hand, the construction company pays less taxes on the Irish workers than on Swedish workers, so it makes for less expensive construction costs. Enjoy the "family" portrait! :)

since you appreciate construction equipment, you should have seen the 8 track crane that was used to build a local suspension bridge.4 men can set it up for full operation in a little over 4 hours

This is very good...as the old saying goes, the right tool for the right job:) You've added a very interesting comment concerning the Irish workers...the EU and even the tax structure. Sounds like the product of a lot of political meddling doesn't it? You undoubtedly know all the political rangling that goes on here about undocumented workers...largely Mexicans...but they are doing jobs that Americans don't want to do. Historically, one of the first huge batch of foreign laborers here in the US were the Chinese brought in to build the Transcontinental Railroad going east through the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains. Irish immigrants were the main source of labor laying track going west...but they were nowhere as reliable and industrious as the Chinese...because of their carousing ways;-) Or, so the books say.
