Description

Page is a small town in northern Arizona located on the southern shores of magnificent man made, Lake Powell. It is near the eastern end of the Grand Canyon. Located outside of Page, is Antelope Canyon, a rare and incredibly beautiful geological formation known as a slot canyon. Created over millions of years by wind and water, the forces of time have formed a cathedral of sandstone, where fluid sandstone waves, curls and arches join together to create a series of towering, narrow passages, in a palette of warm colors. This canyon is located within the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation. The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse' bighanilini, which means "the place where water runs through rocks." Upper Antelope is at about 4,000 feet elevation above sea level and the canyon walls rise 120 feet above the dry streambed. Take plenty of cold water and I recommend a guided, 4-wheel tour out of Paige. I understand that there is a recent rule change that limits tourists time in the canyon to 2 hours. You are not allowed into the canyon when there are thunder storm warning. The canyon has been known to flash flood during major thunder storms. The best way that I can describe this canyon is that it is the drain for all the rain water running down off the mountains that surround this area. PHOTOS Upper right is the rear entrance into the canyon. If it had been on a highway, you would not have seen it. Upper left is inside the canyon and you can see that my flash washed away the fantastic colors. Bottom is a shot straight up without a flash. The colors range from sand, beige, pink, orange, red and purple. Some of the info was from the Paige or Navajo web sites. 1996 photo was scanned. Zoom will help a little. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

I did purchase two photographs, from a professional photographer that I wouldn’t post, due to potential copy write infringement. BUT, if you want to site mail me your E-mail address, I think that I could scan and share my purchases with my RR friends. Dana

Stunning capture of the iridescent colors and striations in this excellent collage, Dana. The rock formation in the first shot looks like it's being warped and twisted, and love the warm orange glow in the bottom pic.
