Description

My next destination was the ancient Buddhist monument known as Borobudur. It lies 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Yogyakarta across the Kedu Plain. Periodically covered by volcanic ash for thousands of years, the Kedu Plain is known as 'the Garden of Java' due to its high agricultural fertility. It reminded me of a long ago trip trough Nebraska except there was no corn, just mile after mile of rice.

Looks like the lack of machinery makes work for a lot of people. Nice shot!

The lines make for a super composition, and the purples and greens are restful (unlike that work!)

Beautiful! I love the combination of vertical lines of the rice and horizontal lines of the raised earth. Wonderful colors and composition! Nice capture of the farmer. I wonder if she is going to pat down the little mound of green, or pick it up. There was a series called "A Town Like Alice" (based on a Nevil Shute book) where a group of British women were forced marched by the Japanese army during WWII across Malaya. Many died and finally (after their Japanese guard had died) they persuaded the head men of a village to let them stay there and help them plant rice. The men were originally very skeptical because they didn't think British women were strong enough to do the work and they thought the village would be punished later because officials of the British government would be angry that western women had done menial labor below their station. It is a very good series.
