Description
Approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Yogyakarta, at the western end of the Kedu Plain, sits Borobudur. This pyramid-like structure is built on and around a natural hill. Construction was started sometime around the beginning of the eighth century. In plan, it resembles a tantric mandala with six square terraces supporting three circular ones. Its been called a three dimensional rendering of the Buddhist conception of the cosmos. The square terraces are covered with carved relief's that can be read as an "instruction manual" for attaining enlightenment. The foundation is a square, approximately 118 meters (387 feet) on each side.

I really like the tremendous 'pen and ink' quality to this print. Also the people lend a sense of the scale to the scene: when I have seen pictures of such places without people they seem much bigger. Very interesting about the meaning of the design.
