Description
Sunday, mid-morning and the three eastbound lanes of Av. Vieria Souto, which runs along Ipanema Beach, are closed to vehicular traffic to allow the citizens of Ipanema to do their weekend workouts.
They were strolling, walking, jogging, running, biking, roller blading, roller coasting, whatever. You name it, they did it. Old, young, singles, couples, groups, young couples pushing baby carriages, young couple leading small children by the hand. But no dogs. I suspect dogs were banned for this event.
People wore bikinis, other swimsuits, running gear, T-shirts, shorts, some men went bare chested, women did not. But all seemed to be on a mission - to get in shape. There were hundreds.
Of course all this exercising made them thirsty and hungry, so there were vendors with mobile stands catering to their needs.

I suspect perfect temperatures and a flat-flat-flat place to walk make it irresistable to get out and move around! I spent three days in Chicago a couple years ago (flattest place I've ever seen) and must have walked 15 miles just for the joy of it. I think we might have jumped on a bus twice the whole time. SUCH fun!
