Description

Lake Powell was created by the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1966. This is the view of one of the hundreds of finger canyons around Lake Powell. If you plan to visit this lake, rent a houseboat for a week and enjoy the lake from the inside. Many of the finger canyons are huge and you could spend a day exploring just one of the larger canyons. Dont forget your snorkeling gear. For more information about the lake and dam, check out my last nights posting. 1996 photo scanned. Please zoom! Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Well done! I wonder how the water levels are now compared to when you took this image. I read somewhere that they are way down.

Great capture Dana, and a fantastic scan, as usual. The last time I came by there was in 2005 on my way back from Colorado City/Hilldale, the infamous twin Mormom community. The last few years the water level of the lake has dropped dramatically (as it has at Lake Mead). Increasing demand and prolonged draught. While Lake Powell is beautiful and many people renting houseboats and spent vacations there, it has been determined that the lake's location is not ideal. Besides the enomous evaporation rate (about 90-inches/year) it also is located on very porous soil, loosing a lot of its volumn annually to both, evaporation and seepage. There actually have been discussions of abandoning the lake. If you ever go to Barry Goldwater's (the AZ senator) photo collection you will see some fantastic pictures of some of the canyons Barry took as a young man, that have been flooded when the lake was created. This is from a person that worked for 22 years for the Arizona Department of water Resources.

POV, clarity, detail, lighting and textures way off the charts in this super splendid shot, Dana, with the lake as smooth as silk.

A beautiful shot of a place that makes me wonder how it looked before it was flooded.
