Description

At the end of the Pilgrim's Walk you ascend a final stairway to the upper level which represents Nirvana. The upper terrace supports 72 stone latticework stupas housing Buddha images. From the top, you have a view of the nearby mountains as well as mount Merapi in the distance. Today Borobudur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is still a place of pilgimage for Buddhists.

I'm relieved to see there are hand-rails! What a place, and what an achievement to reach Nirvana. I'm fairly certain that the climb would indeed induce oblivion in me nowadays.

I remember first seeing the stupas in National Geographic and dreaming of seeing them in person. They were so alien to my young western eyes and so full of mystery. These are marvelous images. I love the image of the stupas all in a row. That's just the magic I remember from looking at the N.G. images so long ago. Wonderful image up to the sky. I love the light coming down. Beautiful captures and information.
