Description

After my visit to Borobudur I spent a few days at a little resort on the south coast of Java called Pangandarang. As always, I checked into my hotel and immediately headed for the bed. As I looked up at the ceiling, there to greet me were two of my best buddies. Now I know some of you might be thinking, "Lizards, eww!" But these are very special lizards. These are geckos and they eat mosquitoes. Lots of mosquitoes. A gecko in your room is considered good luck and I had two of them. The name stems from the Indonesian-Javanese word Tokek, inspired by the chirping sound these animals make. They will expel air from their bodies when calling to each other and the sound is similar to Ehhhh-Ohhhh. When you hear the sound you can rest knowing the mossies won't be bothering you that night. The toes of the gecko have a special adaptation that allows them to adhere to most surfaces without the use of liquids or surface tension. The spatula tipped setae on gecko footpads allow attractive forces called van der Waals interactions to arise between the adhesive setae and the surface (wikipedia). The setae look for all the world like the bottom of a running shoe.

Nice! I always like seeing Geckos around whenever I'm in Hawaii. Some of my travel mates have not been so welcoming though, ha ha!

This is terrific! I've always loved Geckos they seem like very clever creatures and the mosquito feeding is just an added and much prefered bonus. Did either try to sell you auto insurance?

When I was in Cancun, I had a small army of Gekkos in my room and thankfully so because the mosqitos where no problem with them around me...literally

I should love to have such companions in my bedroom, but I'm not sure the boys would be that keen. But we don't have much of a mozzy prob.
