Description

This is a picture of an oddly decorated 1964 Mercury Comet. I was going to write a eulogy for the recently deceased Mercury brand, but I think I'll wait until I find a more purely representative example. This one is a bit, shall we say, "modified." In addition to the leopard print interior and "Hello Kitty" stickers on the back, some one had spray painted it flat black with a rattle can. And then colored in the grille work, wheel hubs and "comet streak" side moldings with what appeared to be a combination of pink house paint and lavender Magic Marker. Frankly, I prefer my own cars to be of the original recipe , but applaud any form of artistic expression. So, more power to them. Photographed in the Lakeview area of Chicago on May 31, 2011.

This is a super find Corey and despite the modifications it still looks to be in great shape. Thanks for the shot and share. dana

Well, at least someone cares about it enough to paint it. Nice POV

At least it will provide some protection until a serious restorer comes along. A friend of mine restored many of these.

I'm actually surprised at how there are so few modified cars rolling around on the streets! I like the not-exactly-representational aspect of home-made decoration, even if it's intended to be representational. It's idiosyncratic and probably says more about the owner/driver than anyone would suspect, and as for the color scheme, I tend more toward the blues myself, but that's just because I like the blue end of the spectrum, when it comes to big, metal thingies. I like this shot, a lot; it's so not-exactly-a-car in all of the ways I like. Seeing a full-on car is nice, but I rather like the quasi-abstractness of something that has a particular sort of carness, without actually being a car. Great angle and intimate view of the pinkish, purpely, mauvish hand-application. Wouldn't it be great if it was actually applied by Q-tips rather than a spray can? Okay, that's just me, but I like this shot a lot. It has a nice slant to it.

I have a vague recollection of the Comet line. I believe one of my father's fishing/hunting/drinking buddies had one - maybe second hand. Those were the days, one could drive 400km to Northern Ontario sipping on Baileys Irish Cream and no seat belts. Then they'd get their rifles out and start hunting moose. Alas, many a fine automobile undergoes a not so professional modification as it passes from one hand to another. All that drinking and driving led to a need for the odd new paint job. Still, this work doesn't look so bad so I should not be so judgemental. Though black and comet does not seem right somehow. I also like the title, well said.

Leopard-print interior and Hello Kitty stickers. Wow. I can only imagine the person who made those decisions! I love the angle of this shot. It shows off the paint job beautifully, and besides ... it's just a great pov for a car of this era. Nicely done!

Great photo! There's a house down the way that has a YARD full of Mercs, some kind of obsession. I love the fact that someone used a marker, it seems to fit with the car somehow.

The words shabby-chic spring to mind, and your capture shows more about the owner than it does about the car itself. This is superb!
