Description
Sukarno, born Kusno Sosrodihardjo, was Indonesia's George Washington. He lead the war for independence against the Dutch from 1945 to 1949 and was president from 1945 to 1967. He was deposed by one of his generals, Suharto, and spent the last three years of his life under house arrest.
The National Monument is a 433 ft (132 meter) tower in the center of Merdeka Square, Central Jakarta, symbolizing the fight for Indonesia's independence. Construction began in 1961 under the direction of President Sukarno and the monument was opened to the public in 1975. It is topped by a flame covered with gold foil.
Several wags I met near the monument referred to it as Sukarno's penis.
