Description

Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. melanacanthus. This is the only hedgehog that blooms red. Hedgehogs are small cacti and relatively rare. Their flesh and fruit are both edible, and have a nice flavor. Do not eat the flesh in winter; it cools the body. If you do eat one, please plant more. The fruit tastes a little like strawberries. These don't usually grow naturally in southern Arizona. You will find them further north.
