Description
This is a pure Poser render with no postwork, just straight out the render mill in a single pass. Pretty memory intensive scene, but with 16 gigs of RAM on a quad-core machine it hummed along just fine. I had just purchased Merlin's "Saxon Settlement" set and wanted to take it out for a spin, and what better way than to fill it up with drunken Vikings?
The scene is one I'd been wanting to visualize for awhile, which comes from the opening chapter of "The Saga of Beowulf" in which the Danes celebrate their recent victory over the legendary Heruli tribe. Here Aeschere (right) and Yrmenlaf (left) engage in a traditional Viking version of arm wrestling, with slightly more at stake than the (lame by comparison) contemporary rendition.
All props in the scene are from the Saxon Settlement, with the exception of the two drinking horns, which are from Valandar's "Drinking Horns" set. Virtually all clothing is from the various Viking/Saxon sets and expansions created by John Malis, except for Simon's costume (center rear) which is "Eric the Red" from the Great Rulers series, and the Apollo Max "Viking Warrior" outfit (figure on the right).
Aside from those two figures, the rest are either Micheal 3 or Vicky 3. The two wrestling figures are both textured with "Nordic Michael", with the Yrmenlaf character havinga custom vein bump and head tattoo added.
The main challenge I was focusing on for this scene was to create a realistic lighting that would emulate what a Viking meadhall might actually look like when lit only by candles and a cooking fire, while concentrating that light on the main action without the rest being overly dark.
I later re-rendered the scene to include more of the meadhall walls and rafters above and used it for the rear cover art of "The Saga of Beowulf, Part I: The Land of Death & Shadow", which you can see on my blog and website.

You got so much into this scene. I can see why you would need "16 gigs of RAM on a quad-core machine". The lighting is perfect, and I especially like the glowing fire in the bottom right corner. The drinking horns, capes, and furs all give it a genuine Viking atmosphere. Excellent planning and execution. You must have a lot more patience than I do...

Yeah, there was a lot more I could have done with the scene in terms of texture detail and grunging it up a lot (the real Vikings would have been a LOT dirtier than this), but that's where my patience gave out. So there you go. Thanks for the kind comments.
