Description

Dear friends, thanks for your interest! I decided to show the yesterday´s areal once again. Let`s begin with the name: "Tempelhof" means translated "Templar`s Place" or "Templar`s Yard". 800 years ago, when Berlin was a very, very small village at the river Spree (15 kilometers away from this place), the Templar´s Order had here a trading place, a so called "comturei". It is unknown were these yard exactly was situated, our archeologists do not know. Only the name survived till today. Recently the whole areal is covered with houses and industrial complexes. Tempelhof is one of twelve districts of Berlin with its own little government; it is a city of maybe 300 000 inhabitants. The harbour here is situated at the Teltow channel, which was built in 1910 to connect all the southern surburbs of Berlin and to help them to catch industrial settlements. The channel is flanked by different industrial complexes; most of them are out of service today; they are ruins and the products were produced in China. This harbour here was very busy and connected Tempelhof with the world; look at the harbour building, it is very large! After the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 the harbour lost its function, when the industrial complexes were globalised and set their workers free. The harbour itsself was in funktion till 2000. For many years nobody had an idea what to do with this areal. now it is a recreation place with different cafes, restaurants and open-air summer bars, a place for events. And it is a tourists- free zone till today, it is far away from the touristic highlights in the center. I hope this information was helpful. friends, thanks for your nice comments, they were very helpful. Please feel free to send new comments for this one, every meaning is appreciated. billcody, Berlin

I have always wanted to see Berlin, and I'm sure I would enjoy it! I am a bit disappointed in how bad the water in the foreground looks. Nice shot!

A beautiful shot Wolfgang and very interesting historical information. Stuff that I never knew and I feel like I have Heimatkunde all over again lol. I am glad you taking the time to research this. The end result of this harbor is similar with what Buenos Aires has done with some of their habors. Warehouses converted to restaurants and stores and new high rise hotel. I think the people here in Berlin have done a nice job with this.

I was stationed in Berlin from 75-77 and fell so much in Love with the place. It's so different now. I worked on Teufelsburg and lived at Andrews Kaserne. I Spent a lot of time between Steglitz, Templehof, Potsdamer Platz and the Kudamm. I'm glad to see the river and marina being used for it's intended use. Beautiful picture of a Beautiful City. Thank you for sharing.

This is a beautiful capture and would think that that huge building would make a grand hotel of condo complex. Dana
