Description

The Queen's Life Guard is the mounted guard at the entrance to both St James's Palace and Buckingham Palace since the English Restoration in 1660, when the St James's Palace of Whitehall was the main royal residence. The guard is on horseback from 10am until 4pm, with the sentries changing every hour. From 4pm until 8pm, a pair of dismounted sentries remain on duty. At 8pm, the gates of St James's Palace are locked, and a single sentry remains until 7am. When The Queen is in London, the Guard consists of 1 Officer, 1 Corporal Major (who carries the Standard), 2 Non Commissioned Officers, 1 Trumpeter and 10 Troopers. This is known as a Long Guard. When Her Majesty is not resident in London, the Guard is reduced to 2 Non Commissioned Officers and 10 Troopers. This is known as a Short Guard. Yes, it was raining. Some info from Wikipedia. A scanned 1985 photo. Zoom will help. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

An excellent capture, but the horse must get sick of standing there, though I guess he can go to sleep and the guard can't. Even for an hour it is a long time to be still.

Excellent capture Dana, you were lucky not to have had dozens of tourists around him. Looks like you may have taken this from a tourist bus! Loved the video by the way and have passed it on to friends.

I hope someone explained all of that to the horses! They must get a bit antsy! At my place, I am the short guard! The long one has his own place now, ha ha!

what a wonderful shot!! Looks so clear it seems as if it was just taken! I have to agree with others...a VERY boring job! I mean I'm sure they're honored to be part of that guard, but that only goes so far, LOL. I have a friend who lives in Birmingham and visits London from time to time and she actually sent me a picture she snapped of one of these guards dozing off...she then sent me a subsequent picture of this guard being replaced with another and the sleepy guard following his superior officer, presumably to be raked over the coals, LOL. Poor guy!!
