Description

Apparently a few others had problems with RR yesterday...nice to know I wasn't the only one... Today I'm a bit under the weather so I'm just stopping by to make another "re-upload" of 3 pieces I removed accidentally. This little thing was based on a photo by our beloved Helle (helanker). (Always a pleasure to work with Helle!) In her honor, I made this pen & ink version of a Danish street. For those of you who don't know "cross-hatch": It's a drawing made of lines crossing each other, thus making "hatch" marks. Cross-hatch---common in etchings too---was the original "3D": Those hatches created 3 dimensions with nothing but lines, the original "renders". If you're interested, this took about 3 hours. It's just a simple render but it's so satisfying to do because you feel like a monk copying holy books. (Well, holy streets, but you get the idea...)
* * * Hope to be back in a day (got more galleries to visit!) Have a fine Tuesday all! Mark

This is superb and I love the complexity of it. This is one of those you have to sit with and contemplate for a while to enjoy. I love the details and the atmosphere and the way this image, Danish in origin, reminds me of the quasi-Czech life I lived for a while; I've now heard that I'm under orders to return as soon as possible, and well...I'm not opposed to that! But anyway, all Czech stuff aside, this is great. This is the sort of thing I'd have hanging on a wall in my own home, HA, and it would be perfect if in my wanders I managed to live in Denmark (next door to Helle) with this hanging on my wall! This is superb, and I love your mastery of Old School art-forms.

A wonderful drawing, with a super 3D effect with all your beautiful 'cross-hatching'. It is a beautiful dedication to Halle. I have never done much of this form of art but I can imagine it must take a lot of time and effort but these results surely make it worth while. It is such a pretty little street too. Excellent work.

What an amazing piece; it IS the kind of thing that only the most patient could even attempt. That SO would not be me!! Great work, Mark.

This is a very cool artwork, Mark. I really like the style and cross hatch a lot. My painting technique takes many many hours and one of the things I enjoy about it is the repetitive motion, as it is a very meditative experience. So I can relate to the creation of this fine work. CC

And what a beauty it is! I've spent many many hours doing this in my younger days, also the version with little dots instead of cross hatching. I'm impressed by your skills here, well done!

This has that inviting and comfortable feel. I am a big fan of well-done pen and ink and this is really a shining example of how it can be done with true skill.

I've been sitting here staring at this magical cross-hatch pencil drawing. I found my focus going to each individual window pane...while darkness appears to prevail inside most of the rooms I also see where outside illumination has lit some of the window frames giving them dimension and causing me to think about what might be inside. I like the way you've shaded differently for various textures and your tonal flow unites the entire drawing. So well done Mark, with such a fascinating technique.

Mark, this is such a lovely and elegant work of art and I'm so thrilled you are sharing it with us again. The way you brought Helle's photo to life in this manner is breathtaking, and something she will always treasure for sure. I love this little Danish street scene and especially enjoyed your detailed explanation of what cross hatch work is. I can't beging to imagine the time it would take a normal artist to try this as creating a master work like this in 3 hours seems almost impossible for the rest of us. The effort in all the fine detailing is something few people would take the time to do, yet your remark about finding it satisfying and comparing it to the work the monks do really was thoughtful. Hope you get feeling better soon, please take care.

The many hours you spent on this labor of love payed off in this exquisite paean to the time honored medium of crosshatching, Mark. In fact, crosshatching is one of the filters offered by Photoshop in their extensive menu of tools to alter images. Stellar adaptation of your friend Helle's photo. You are most adept with the croquille pen, my friend. And, sorry about your illness.

I've never done cross-hatching. (I don't want to tell you how far a picture of mine progresses in 3 hours) I love the shading you have created with it and the beautiful lines and convex shapes. Wonderful perspective, sloping roof lines and textures. I like the open window upstairs in the first home. It gives me a feeling of the life going on on the other side. I love the way you have done the windows on the lower floor too. I can see the light playing across their surface while heavier shadows lurk in the corners. Beautiful drawing and lovely dedi to Helle!

I'm so glad I saw your comment at Andrea's (durleybeachbum) gallery .. somehow I've lost touch. Too many other things going on, real life interfering with digital life, LOL, and putting massively behind in going to galleries. Your drawings are so marvelous, the linework and cross hatching here give this one such wonderful textures, simply pull the eye in. The houses are wondrously cozy looking. Like a fairy tale street!

He is powerful and at a time is simple, gentle and loving! I can look to this drawing for hours and still discover and discover new things. I wowed, Mark! Is a masterpiece! Another one!!you have such magic in this!

Fantastic work. I want to step into a penciled-in suit and go knocking at all the doors to meet the people living there... Your pencil (and incredible talent) has brought this scene to life!
