Description

28 Tank is a stock pond. There are hundreds of stock ponds all over Arizona. They are usually constructed along arroyos, or washes, for the purpose of catching runoff. Most washes in Arizona are ephemeral. If they are in an area were runoff results primarily from spring thaw, they may run several weeks, if they catch runoff from isolated summer thunderstorms, they run only a few hours. But capturing this runoff usually provides enough water for range cattle. Were there is not enough runoff, ranchers construct metal or stone stock tanks and provide water by the use of windmills which pump groundwater. This stock pond is on the Coconino Plateau which at this point is about 6,000-ft. in elevation and water in these arroyos drains directly into the Colorado River, some thirty miles to the north. Only stock ponds located within the Gila or Little Colorado watersheds are being adjudicated (this is for Rob's anticipated question). This picture was taken on 27 August 2011, Sig... A foot note to stock ponds and range land: Ranchers usually own a certain amount of land and lease land from the Federal Government. On government leased land the government determines how many head of cattle the rancher can run on it. Typically, here in the Southwest it is often only one or two head per section, i.e square mile. The land is so poor that it could not sustain any more! A foot note to the foot note. When I was still working for the State of Arizona my partner and I inspected this tank around 2005.

Very cool capture, Sig I was involved with the Lacamas Lake restoratiion Project where we created stock ponds and such so as to reduce the amount of urine and other such by-products from entering Lacamas Lack and thus encouragaing the algea blooms
