Description

It's been awhile since I posted anything in my "Tangerine" series. This picture of Chip seems to fit the bill. As I recall, (what little I can recall), this shot was made directly under a sodium vapor light in an alley near Clark Street and Belmont Avenue. According to the time stamp, I took it at 3:26 AM, which would explain why Chip looks like he might actually have fallen asleep here. The details of this particular evening have since deposited themselves in the Dead Letter Department of my brain and are thus, undeliverable. However, seeing as how it WAS 3:26 AM, we were in Boystown, and only about 800 feet from the train station, I suspect massive quantities of both alcohol and Lady Gaga were probably involved... Photographed in the Lakeview area of Chicago on July 10, 2010. As always, thanks to everyone who is kind enough to view and comment on my gallery.

Hilarious, Corey! Thankyou for a good giggle and a most engaging image! THAT man manages to look quite elegant even in this state.

Talk about atmosphere and mood! Looks like you had a very passive target at 3:26am:) The old brick wall and lighting really sets Chip off in a world of his own...steampunk comes to mind... Well done.

Always nice to see another shot of Chip; he is such a friendly looking guy! And I like the tangerine tone, and tangerine describes it exactly. I could sit right there listening to Gaga all night! Strangely, I remember using products from the Erie Brush Company!

Hey, I remember that night, and yeah, it did involve Lady Gaga, and--quite possibly--Miss Foozie, or did it? Well, in some alternate universe, it did. Miss Foozie (and Lady Gaga) are like that: pleasant universal constants, though I haven't quite figured out Miss Foozie's habit of saying: "Hello Pineapples," to people...it's such an endearing habit though. And as for this shot, I think there was also Arizona iced tea involved shortly after. Or was in Snapple? Hmmm... I love your Tangerine Series, especially since they're a record of something that's vanishing. Things are always vanishing in Chicago. Pressurized sodium vapor is going the way of the Edsel now; all of those orange lights are being replaced by whiter, brighter metal halide lights, and so I wonder what night-time Chicago is going to look like in 5 years. This is a great shot, and I do look contemplative. I remember sitting on that awkward...whatever that thing was, trying not to detract too much from the sign behind me, since wall-painted signs (in alleys, no less) are a throwback to when Chicago was a different city. Remember when alleys sometimes sheltered the main entrances to places that always managed to smell like the insides of old fashioned, quasi-Victorian pencil sharpeners? I love progress and adore snazzy technology, but I bemoan the loss of texture and scent; Chicago doesn't have a smell any more...well, it does, when diesel trucks go by. This is a great shot; I like it a lot, but now I've got Lady Gaga singing "Paparazzi" stuck in my head. I also like the way this image makes me think of zillions of different things at once. Visually, it captures the slightly-more-orange visual vibe of a city like New Crobuzon (Read Perdido Street Station and you'll get it,) or some place Ray Bradbury might have written about, back when he was...well...animate. I think that's my favorite part of this picture: it evokes a city as different as that single wall behind me.

I love your Tangerine series, and this one is outstanding! I love the way those lights change everything, including Chip. I love Chip, and I love the fact that he's framed by some part of the wall that looks like a grate or a window or something. I love the sign, which reminds me of the Fuller Brush Man who used to come around when I was a kid and sell brushes. He would give us kids these cool little samples. In general, this is just cool, for so many reasons.

I like the "Tangerine" tint and a great shot of Chip taking '40 winks'.
