Description

I've got the scientific name after posting to bugguide.net. But in the case of my picture, you get a better view here than with the smaller pic they allow there. There are other "dog day cicadas" but Canicularis is the one officially by that name. Normally you never see these critters because they're either hidden by foliage or way up in the treetops. But my luck on the day the photo was taken allowed me to find this one. It was barely crawling on the ground. Or perhaps I should say she? (After ID'ing of course) With the amount of vigor she had left (hardly any) this cicada was probably done with laying eggs already and resigned to food for birds or other insects. Although it looks large and scary, it's actually a fairly passive and easily handled insect.

Cool shot, nice perspective on your hand. We don't have Cicadas here in So Cal. Find them to be very odd looking insects. Like other insects got "Frankenstein'd" together. Nice tribute for its last days of life.
