Description

Good evening for today! This here is another aspect of Berlin. It is a relict of the Cold War. This is the american radar station on the Teufelsberg in the old West-Berlin. From top of the hill you have a wonderful sight across the roofs of Berlin, when the weather is fine your look reaches 50 kilometers in the surrounding. The right place for a military installation. The American Forces built here a radar station to control all (military) airplane movements for hundreds of miles. Everything was top secret, of course, and a lot of stories make the circle till today. From this point, I have heard, the american military personel should reached till the Ural mountains deep in the Soviet Union, far east of Moscow..... After the fall of the wall and the end of the cold war this station was given up by the U.S. Forces and is now a ruin. When zooming in you can see some damages. Inside all military equipment was removed, of course, but it is a place of mystery and desire, too. It is a fascinating place for souvenir hunters and photographers, film crews, etc. Entering the areal is illegal, it is fenced with a double fence; a fence with many holes meanwhile and a lot of cheap repairs. A security crew protects this buildings, but from time to time invaders brake through, I might be the next.... Nobody has an idea what to do with the ruins. There were plans for a hotel or expensive flats for the rich and famous, but the ground is decontaminated with different poisons: The Teufelsberg, what means "devil`s hill" was not formed by mother nature; it is one of four giantic hills of waste and brickstones from WW II, a quarter of the old destroyed Berlin is buried here. The whole hill is covered with wood today, but after every rain the poisons are washed out to the ground water.... Not the right place for a hotel swimming pool or luxury flats.... Thanks for your interest in my gallery and thanks for your comments for my older pics. Please feel free to send new comments, they are always wellcome. And ENJOY, this is the most important. billcody, Berlin
