Description

ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English EGO 0602-00911069609: Summary EGO 0602-00911069609 is the tenth satellite of EGO 0602-00911069544 - a fourteen (14) Jovian mass Y-dwarf or 'brown dwarf' informally named 'Freya' - third life bearing world of 'Freya's Necklace'1 and the largest member of the Freya system. Rotational period is 57024 sec (0.66 days), axial tilt 13.1 degrees2. Orbital path a 0.009 eccentricity ellipse, inclined 2.0 degrees, mean distance 3.01 million (106) km, 9.2 day period. Mass 1.82 Earths, density 3.3 g/cm3, diameter 18412 km. Interior consists of a semi-molten silicate mantle surrounding a liquid nickel-iron core. Combined with a short rotational period, the planetary magnetic field is 22% more intense than that of Earth. The moon has no recognized common name.3 In spite of appearances, this satellite is a water world covered by a global (4.2% saline4) ocean averaging 8070m in depth - maximum depth of 10950m. The body exhibits plate tectonics and nine ocean plates, but the only genuine land masses are the current 1609 small volcanic islands along the plate boundaries. The highest permanent peak is in the southern hemisphere at 2.8 km above sea level - an island volcano surrounded by floating biomass. Part of an inaccurately described 'super continent': a quasi-solid layer of carbon compounds mixed into a composite of volcanic dust and ash averaging 280m in thickness, floating, unfixed, on the ocean's surface. Ephemeral in size and shape; the land mass is observed to shift and break off islands over a span of decades. On a similar period, total land area varies from 41% to 45% of the surface as shifting ocean currents tear down some coast line and conversely build up other areas. Glacier sheets are cited as terrestrial equivalents. Ninety (90) percent of atmospheric mass extends 31km above sea level with a 23% variance from pole to equator. Composition: 79.9% nitrogen, 9.4% carbon dioxide, 5.8% oxygen, 4.6% water vapour, 0.2% methane and other trace materials. Sea level pressure averages at 171.2 kPa. Though nitrogen dominates the atmosphere, the satellite's red hue is a consequence of two factors. First is the continuous presence of fine (610-760nm) volcanic dust in the upper atmosphere scattering light at the red end of the visible spectrum5. Second is the existence of red, photoconsumptive, cellular organisms suspended in the mid to lower atmosphere which catalyze carbon dioxide. The native quadro-helix heredity encoding mechanism makes these organisms highly resistant to increased ionizing radiation at high altitudes where atmospheric protection is small or nil. The quadro-helix system suggests that life on this body may have originated in the atmosphere. An evolutionary track common for gas giants6 having no surface, but rare for a terrestrial7 sized body. Quadro-helix encoding occurs when life establishes in harsh environments; exposed to ionizing radiation and/or strong magnetic fields. It is less prone to perpetuating genetic mistakes which would occur in such environments. However, evolution due to natural selection is slowed as mutative changes are less likely to take hold8. This is reflected in the low biodiversity on the surface and in the oceans. Number of distinct species is less than three hundred thousand, 71% of which are single cell plants. I've got so much catching up to do, and I'm glad to start here: I love your whole Encyclopedia Galactica series and always look forward to these. I love reading your scholarly texts: they're always written with such skill and a real sense of...well...the real! I get to the ends of these and want to click the "See References" references...but alas, I can't click and go to the actual sources. Oh well...I love that bit of quasi-authenticity. Great stuff. Really compelling! I love the idea of variable land masses, floating around rather like bacterial mats. Fantastic.

your scientific description of this world is flawless! if one didn't know better they would believe that this is a description of an actual planet. so all i can say is, wow :) the only trouble i have is your description of the biodiversity. just a bit hard to believe there could be such a huge number of biodiverse single cell organisms :)

More about Freya's Necklace! Cool! This particular satellite doesn't sound like a very good candidate for a summer resort. Very little land and what's there will not be THERE for long. Very interesting about the cellular organisms suspended in the atmosphere and the low biodiversity. I am looking forward to reading what the other life bearing worlds of Freya's Necklace are like. Beautiful image! I like the POV of looking over the bulk of EGO 0602-00911069609 and seeing another of the satellites very close by. I wonder which one it is and if it is one of the seven life bearing ones. Fond as I am of planet Earth, I wonder what it would be like to live on a world with more than one moon, one sun, and far distant stars in the sky. Fascinating narrative and beautiful image!
