Description

ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English Definition: 'Foriscience' A Language English1 term derived from the Language Latin expression 'scientia foris' meaning 'knowledge from abroad'. The word applies to natural principles considered scientific by advanced civilizations which can not be tested through local technologies. Scientific communities do not refer to theorems as scientific unless supported by objective observations (facts) and predictable, testable results. By their nature, foriscience principles lie outside this category of rigorous inquiry. Young civilizations struggle with the scientific standing of knowledge gleaned from older civilizations. Acceptance without requisite experimentation is an act of faith rather than scientific inquiry. But it is also unscientific to reject the vast knowledge and experience other societies offer. Still, scientists assert that scientific theories must be testable. To compromise, when foriscience models are cited they are noted with the Latin expression 'sic aiunt', meaning 'so they say'. Matters of foriscience are as mundane as the location of a star. No one civilization can directly observe all regions of the galaxy. All are dependent on data provided by other civilizations for complete maps. Even the youngest civilizations have something to contribute due to direct, albeit limited, access to their regions of space2 creating more accurate records for this reason. This is one of the few examples of older civilizations being interested in the activities of younger ones. An exotic example of foriscience is bubble gravity.3 Spheroid membranes of gravitational force thrown out of large gravity wells. A phenomena accepted to be the creative force for nanoworlds, biospheres that float deep in the atmosphere of some hyper-giant planets.4 But, given their environment, the study of bubble gravity is beyond the technological reach of less advanced societies. The most commonly cited example of foriscience is autonegation.5 The phenomena of 'guaranteed failure' that thwarts Red tooling projects beyond an eleven dimensional temporal context. It also implies that the universe is 'cognizant' of projectors' intentions. Young civilizations do not command the techniques of tooling, it is impossible for them to test the concept of autonegation and must defer to the science of Red civilizations. However, given the philosophical implications of autonegation, local scientists find that acceptance difficult. Complicating matters is the fact that no two civilizations have commonality with unifying models of the universe. Each civilization has demonstrated that the universe works differently. This is attributed to yet another foriscientifc principle called 'universal overlap'.6 The universe is in reality a multiverse built from a series of overlapping universes, all importing their local physical laws. Dominance of one set of laws over others is dependent upon an individual's perception and conceptualization of the universe - 'sic aiunt'. For example, the dimensional perception of time varies greatly from one race to another. Philosophers wonder if this structure is the underlying foundation for creativity as each member of each civilization can potentially discover the universe differently. However, in one special case, the question of embracing foriscience has already been answered. All confirmed civilizations have members called 'Librarians'. These individuals are bestowed with the surviving knowledge of Civilization Isis Elder7. This was a lot of fun to read! I love the 'so they say' bit. There are a lot of politicians in my neck of the woods that would have a very hard time accepting bubble gravity or autonegation. They haven't excepted evolution or climate change yet. If the Red civilizations came in the guise of a god, maybe they would accept foriscience though it would have to be called something else. Science is suspect after all. It's a fascinating world you paint, where knowledge from alien worlds could be collected with no real understanding of how it came to be and no way of verifying it. A world were there are Red tooling projects to an eleven dimensional temporal context but doomed to failure beyond that, and perhaps a cognizant universe insuring the failure. A world of a series of overlapping universes each as different as a civilizations' perception and conceptualization have made them. I can see one benefit of such a world right off the bat. It would drive absolutists and people that see the world in terms of black and white crazy. I love this image! I'm not sure what it is, a tooling project...overlapping universes...nanoworlds? Whatever it is, it is gorgeous! Beautiful depth, motion, and colors.
