Description

This is the first of a series of pictures I took in La Laguna, when people were starting to gather fot the feast of St. Benito. Actually the celebration includes a number of events lasting a week, with the final day (Sunday afternoon) ending with a meeting in a square and people celebrating with costumes and music. But this young girl seemed annoyed by her mom's fussing. Thanks for your kind comments.

I'm coming to one of your series from the start, for a change. This is another of your montages of urban life & culture & the moments that multiply across an urban landscape. The capture of mother & daughter is wonderful, the daughter's pose totally put out while the mother---with that tuft of hair over her face---is struggling grandly. Love the moment. But beyond that, the colors are so vivid, with those golden (greenish) yellows in the gowns of mother & daughter, and the bright reds in the background (both in the coca cola vendor as well as in the right-back whatever-it-is). And the textures abound, from the wonderful gnarly trees (like big furry bears) to the closer bushes, to the debris in the foreground lower right corner. You have a real way for including these things across your picture plane, and knowing where to include & where to cut off. And the burst of light in the center---from the whites against the mother & daughter's gowns---is the perfect centerpiece for this very vivid 'collection'. It's really a symphony of interacting colors, hues & textures, and it's typical of the mass of activity you naturally catch in a city. I just started a series I call "urban collisions," and I don't know if I'll post them yet; but they contain the juxtaposition of so many styles common to an american city, where we've adapted styles going back hundreds of years, only recreated them, and piled them into our eclectic streets. But as I study my 'series', I'm reminded of how naturally you do this by comparison, and how you manage very unruly visual elements with genuine ease. Mine are more studies, while yours are living documents. A beautiful combination of many things in one shot, incl the wonderful mother & daughter. More fine work from you, Sandra.

When I first saw this, I was reminded of a neighbor I had once named June and her daughter Bethany. Bethany was probably a couple years older than this little girl. We lived in a duplex and every school morning I could hear them through the bathroom wall as June brushed Bethany's hair. "OW! GET ORFF! STOP MUM!" "If you brushed your hair yourself, I wouldn't have to do this." I never saw June brush Bethany's hair, but I imagine it looked something like this. Excellent image! The little girl is really putting on the drama, but her mom looks singularly unimpressed. Wonderful lighting and fantastic capture of the moment.
