Description

The Winged Victory of Samothrace is a 2nd century BC, Parian marble sculpture, of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory). Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre, Paris, France and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world. The 129 inch (328 cm) high statue is displayed at the top of the Daru staircase. Winged Victory, discovered in 1863, is estimated to have been created around 190 BC. It was created to not only honor the goddess, Nike, but to honor a sea battle. It conveys a sense of action and triumph as well as portraying artful flowing drapery through its features which the Greeks considered ideal beauty. I found a copy of this honored statue, on the bow of a ship, in the main hall of the City Hall, Gloucester, Massachusetts. It is dated 1905 and I assume that it is some sort of dedication to Gloucesters fishing fleet and its battle with the Atlantic Ocean. Gloucester is my hometown and was the subject of Sebastian Jungers, 1997 non-fiction book “The Perfect Storm”. It was adapted, into a 2000 dramatic disaster film, directed by Wolfgang Petersen. The movie stared George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, William Fichtner, John C. Reilly, Allen Payne, John Hawkes, Diane Lane, Michael Ironside, Karen Allen and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Most info from Wikipedia. Photo taken in July. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Tons of folds and patterns in this capital capture of this very old sculpture, Dana. And, I have the Perfect Storm on DVD, starring the aforementioned actors. Very good movie.

What a marvel of a shot! I love the POV and the sense of history embedded in that nicely colored stone. The details are nice and rich, and I love the additional information you provided in your text. I remember the movie mentioned: I was surprised to see Karen Allen in it, but also pleased. This is fantastic.
