Description

Another fascinating store window in the old town of Wallace, Idaho. I think the last vacuum tubes I saw for sale in a store was in about 1980. Anybody have more up-to-date experiences with these pre-digital revolution devices? Bill:) "Window Shopping" thumb_2249728.jpg

Yes, but I'm retired, so I don't have to talk about it any more. :P I love them with that glass block wall as a backdrop. One of those times when we were standing next to each other shooting the same thing, and got a totally different result! My shots of these beauties is more about reflections and less about function. Nicely done!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll tell you what..... Those tubes would probably fetch several thousand dollars from a collector! Those are some beautiful specimens - antique tubes for sure... Do a search for antique tube on eBay sometime - you'll be amazed! Wonderful shot of these beauties, Bill!

Tara is right the window does lend itself to the time. I remember these days well, as a kid I had to take the accumulator (glass and full of acid, wouldn't be allowed now) to the local garage for a recharge. My dad used to mend watches, clocks and wireless as we called them for the villagers. Ah good old times!!

I can't ever remember anything like this..... I know my dad had to had...he always took things for repair...I never paid much attention...unless I was fascinated with it..like a new dog, kitten, barbie or mom making the homemade barbie dress because they watched their money...so nope don't recognize this image at all.........they do look rather unique..and love the window behind them............ Great image and pic Hugs Susan~

This is really interesting Bill. I had an old tube amp years ago, but it caught fire in my bedroom. Lucky I was using it at the time, so the house didn't burn down! My mate has a modern version, but I'm not an expert as to whether it's the same thing, or are they for cosmetic value these days. He paid a heap for it so maybe they are the real deal.

As a confirmed Hi-Fi buff, valves have always sounded sweeter and more musical to my ears, than transistor or digital devices. It has taken decades for them to catch up and then cost 10 times as much! These are interesting devices Bill, perhaps with ? VU Meters some sort of radio?

The shapes of these are so pretty; I remember replacing something like a much smaller version of something like this in an old television, I think...it's been a LONG time! Great capture!

OH, I remember alright, as my brother since he was 10 build his own radios. He went to the second hand radio shop and bougt things for this and I remember our comon room was filled up with such stuff. Where did he get the money from. Well, he walked through all the south west area of Copenhagen, where we lived, and checked all Cigeret slots in the area for forgotten money; also under them, where money could roll inn. He always broght a stick. Then he found old iron bolts and such and sold it for a little money at the scavenger. Yes I remember very well. Excellent shot, BIll. :)

My father tinkered with radios and tvs for a hobby - his workbench in the garage was covered with boxes and boxes of vacuum tubes. Great find and shot.

Reminds me of our hi-fi from 1953. Every Christmas a tube would die in the power amp so we had to drag the 15 pound unit to the radio shop. Always another tube than the previous one. We finally got a more modern tape, radio and record player in 1983. It lasted only to 1993. Sigh. By that time we couldn't get new tubes for the old hi-fi, and have spent a lot more money on short-lived transistor stuff. Sigh. But, tube radios will work despite EMP (electro-magnetic pulse)! The tubes in your photo are REALLY old! I recall seeing them as antiques already back in the 1950s. Very nice photo, the insides are fascinating. Great job with the glass wall behind, letting through the light. :-)

OMG, what beauties! I never knew they got that big! And to think that the tiny transistor put them and their smaller progeny asunder. I not only had radios and television sets with tubes, I used to test the diodes and triodes over at the local electronics or drug store. And, last but not least, fantastic clarity in this shot, considering the conditions, Bill.

OH WOW! This is frakkin' awesome! Way back in the dim, dusty days of 2004 - 2006: Pre-Czech era, I helped take care of my maternal grandmother: she had the advancing stages of what we thought was Alzheimers, only it was a different form of dementia, brought on by a rather large number of exceptionally small strokes: capillary damage rather than damage to larger blood vessels. As a result of that, her cognitive abilities degenerated and her behavior went through an odd sort of regression. Anyway, it was during this time that I'd managed to rummage through a number of junk drawers and stuff in the garage. I found a couple of these, more like the ones with the metal collars on them. As I have a rather sizable collection of Star Wars action figures (most of which is in Texas now: long story there!) I decided that I should do something other than allow them to collect dust on a shelf...so I built complex diorama thingies for them and well...needless to say, with little 3 3/4 inch plastic people (human and other) involved, these little babies look far more high-tech than they probably should. They also look deliciously cryptic and ominous as well. That's my most recent experience with those. Unfortunately, only my action figures survived the changes that came...5 of them continue to reside in the Czech Republic, as I took a few of them with me, sans equipment. (It's an odd feeling to have to explain action figures to airport security!) Anyway, enough about that: I love this shot! So much glass. So many different species of glass. And the light is positively superb. This is a place I'd love to visit, and I'd love to buy a couple of these babies too! They're so cool! I love this shot and the details in it are amazing!
