Description

This is a response to Chip's (chipka) previous post. We had just emerged from Unabridged Books that warm summer day, and after having stood up for a half hour, I really needed to sit down. One of the occasionally charming things about the new gentrified Lakeview are the niceties: like benches. Benches are a rarity in many Chicago neighborhoods these days. Nobody seems to know why, but the overall consensus is that the lack of anywhere to sit will discourage the increasing army of homeless people from congregating and "pestering the taxpayers." And in typical cut-off-your-nose-to-spite-your-face political style, the removal of benches not only inconveniences the homeless, but everyone else. Suppose you've worked 12 hours on your feet and would like to sit down? Suppose you're elderly?. Suppose you're disabled, like yours truly? You can walk forever in this town without a place to sit. Even the bus kiosks no longer have benches in them. I don't think local politicians thought that one through. I don't think they're CAPABLE of thinking anything through. GROWL. (Gnashing of teeth.) But I digress... Where were we? Oh, yes, Chip and I sitting on a strategically placed bench outside Unabridged Bookstore....While he perused his purchases, I pulled out my not so trusty Nikon and began to fire away. Back in June, shortly before Chip discovered his camera had a sepia tone feature, I found that mine had a cyan one. So, for a while in there about one third of everything I shot was tinted blue. This was one of the many, and was made about 10 minutes before Chip's sepia capture of the same area. Since he was only sitting a few inches away from me he appears in several of shots. I kind of like how this one came together. Photographed in the Lakeview area of Chicago on August 14, 2011. Tomorrow, Tara and Bill will be making their long awaited visit to Chicago. I've been looking forward to this. I'm sure it will be a lot of fun, and many pictures will be made. Watch this space!

I remember that day! It was one of the few warm ones we've had this year! I remember that moment, too. I was saying something though I don't remember what. Ooh, and I'm holding Tinkers in my hand. I love a good book, especially one purchased at random, all because I stood in front of its shelf and opened, at random, to a page. I read it. I'd landed, smack-dab in the middle of a beautiful and lyrical passage concerning a potentially-flatulent horse named Prince Edward. I love stories with pre- and post-flatulent horses in them. As for this shot: well, I like it for numerous reasons, especially for it's cyan-tinted capture of an area that looks so much better in either Cyan or Sepia. Have you noticed that everyone seems to be wearing the same sandals...and what's the deal with the perambulatory device with more gears on it than a diesel truck. Gears on a pram? What? Yuppies! What'll they buy next? Don't answer that. I have a delicate stomach. This is a fantastic shot. I haven't read Tinkers yet...but I've just finished Kraken. Holy cow, what a novel!

Tell Chip THAT is an 'Infant Transport System' (!), and they cost 3x more than my Volvo did. Our council has closed many of the public toilets, originally to prevent gay men meeting, especially at the 'cottages' in my local park. Since then they have closed more to save money on cleaning. I leave you to imagine the many unpleasant outcomes, and to sympathise with our ageing population and cross-legged holiday makers. Fortunately the loos on the beach all remain open... I love the pic, BTW.

Your blue period gave a super result with this capture and I agree about there not being enough seats around the towns these days, also the toilets seem to be in short supply too. Not great for an ageing population or if you are disabled.

Wonderful blue! I was totally into the tangerine thing, and now here's blue as well. Okay ... I'm ready! This is way cool. Sorry it took me so long to get to this, but I've been playing with friends in Chicago for a couple days. I'm sure you understand! :D
