Description

Captured 8/15/08, early in the morning, within walking distance of my haute habitat. This should easily fall under the Great Scott! category, because I've seen many varieties of palm trees in Southern California, several with cone shaped growths at their center, but never with a pistil or ovary(?) like this, with its thousands of seductive fingers forming a most exotic orb. One could easily be mesmerized by it if stared at long enough. I tried researching this variety on Google, but was overwhelmingly engulfed by a ton of information overload on palm trees, which I don't have the patience for. If anyone has the answer to what exactly this round thing is, let us know and I'll retitle the posting. I wonder if Andrea ever tried growing this species in her vast garden. Oh, and please don't ask about the color variation between the top two photos and the bottom one. That's the way it came out, sans any postwork. Ciao, thankx for clicking on, and for any and all favs and complimentary comments. Addendum: The mystery has now been solved as indicated below. Thanks ladies!

I think in the Sago Palm family, Harry. It looks like it belongs in a horror movie.

That's an easy one - we call them SAGO PALM (Cycas revoluta) here in OZ. The most widely cultivated of all cycads, sago palm is prized in its native Japan as a bonsai subject. They love our Sub-tropical climate, I have got a very small one in my garden, evenso they produce leaves each year, they are very notorioous for slow growing ... and another reason why they are so expensive! Hope that helps Harry? BB

Okay, yes, thankx to morningglory and blondeblurr, we now know what variety of palm tree that is. But I still don't know what they specifically call that big round thing. It's gotta have a name.

What superb captures of this interesting looking palm. We don't have palms this far south so I can't help you on what this is but maybe it is the flower and maybe it opens up more later. What an intriguing plant.

Okay, I got the latest update from morningglory as to the identity of that Medusa-like round growth. She said it is the female bloom, or ovary, which contains the seeds of the Sago Palm. And, it is poisonous when open, especially to dogs. Thank you, Terry.

I like all 3 photos in this collage but the clarity in #1 makes it outstanding. Dana

Wow, what an amazing set of shots; truly an alien kind of growth, I can imagine Chip writing a story incorporating this growth into it! Great work Harry, and I'm glad you finally found out what it is!

It is a very beautiful form! Thankyou for the pics, Harry. My medication gives me paper thin skin so I HATE palms in my garden. I set fire to the last one when it was still quite small because the fronds are sharp and the tiniest contact with them makes my arms bleed. But your photos are safe and therefore lovely!
