Description

Into the clouds Well we went for another hike. The weather forecast was good, clear skies, light winds and very good visibility. Well that went pear shaped. The walk was to go up Hartsop above How and up to Hart Crag. Eight and a half miles and 2750 feet up. There was cloud but the winds got up and we thought they would move...wrong. This is at about 1500 feet and where we are heading is the other end of the ridge in the cloud. Somewhere out there are lovely mountain top ridges. Well it didnt lift and by the time we got to where the cloud is starting on the ridge it descended and visibility went down to about 20 feet. Scary. We know the weather can turn quickly in the lake district but we have never got caught out like this. At the time I took this shot I thought how wonderful it all looked in the early morning light....I changed my mind when it covered us. So very long day out trying to follow the paths. But I thought I would share this with you. Needs a full size view

Ah yes! But look at the fabulous picture you got - so dramatic. Bad weather always makes for more interesting and dramatic shots.

At least you made it out alright. What a fantastic photo! I was hiking in the mountains in Nevada once and it suddenly went from sunny, to cloudy, to almost steel-grey. Then rain, followed by snow and hail (buckshot sized)...then more rain, snow, slush and hail. All in about a half an hour. It kept repeating, like Nature had gone slightly haywire for 30 minutes.

You know this shot is better for the lack of clarity. What mystery lies beyond the mist and cloud? As a photographic image I do not miss seeing the destination. However, I have been caught out traversing across an alpine ridge when a thunderstorm quickly blew in and all hell broke loose in torrential rain and hail and lighting and you are right out there, a prime target and no way to get down fast. So I am also empathetic to what happened to you and know full well the miserable experience of being drenched on a mountain hike.
