Description
Eino IImari Juutilainen
Born Feb 21st 1914, Lieksa Finland
Died Feb 21st 1999, Tuusla Finland
Juutilainen was the the top scoring ace of the Finnish airforce and the highest scoring 'non-German' fighter pilot of all times, with 94 confirmed kills in 437 missions.
Of his 94 kills, 34 were scored while flying the Brewster Buffalo.
Juutilainen flew the Fokker D.XXI, the Brewster Buffalo and the Me 109 fighter planes.
He was one of only four people to receive Finlands highest military decoration, The Mannerheim Cross, twice.
By the end of the war none of Juutilainens aircraft had ever been hit by fire from enemy aircraft. Though he was once forced to land after his Me-109 was hit by 'friendly' anti-aircraft fire.
Like German ace Erich Hartmann and Japanese ace Saburo Sakai, Juutilainen never lost a wingman in combat.
During the Continuation War, Juutilainen served with 3/LeLv 24 flying Brewster Buffalo B239s, in his BW-364 "Orange 4" he shot down 28 of his 34 Buffalo kills, including three triple kills, between July 9th 1941 and November 22nd 1942.
My SB (High Speed) Bomber, and my thanks to 'Briney' for his excellent Brewster Buffalo model available free at ShareCG (re-painted at The Plant)

Hey, Neil, this was a real surprise! You found out about Ilmari Juutilainen. Glad to see you post this one! The Finnish wars with the Soviet Union is a conflict few know about. I've seen several Finnish films about the war - darned best made war films I've ever seen (including injuries, and a guy blown up by an artillery hit - gutted and all - wow! I just can't figure how some of those special effects were done!). From those films I've learned a lot. And later, a few books. Sheesh, such tenacity! "Sisu" the Finns call it. Keep up the good work! I'll check the Plant for more interesting carryings-on! :-)

NIce scene and slice of history.

Another ace enjoyed a well deserved retirement. Excellent paint job on the Brewster! The bomber looks excellent too, I'll have to read up about that one.

Outstanding work detailing a little known part of the War. As I remember, the Finns loved the Buffalo, though it was greatly modified from the American version. Cool work.

I've been "somewhat" aware of the USSR-Finish conflicts but a lot of it is fragmentary. Hadn't heard of this ace, so am pleased to add one more piece to my information about that conflict.
