Description


These pretty flowers are common in the Great Smoky Mountains. They are at the end of their bloom in late September but still add color to the landscape. This medicinal plant (Monarda didyma)was used in a wide variety of ways though for headache seems the most common. John Evelyn, 17th century diarist wrote "Balm is sovereign for the brain, strengthening the memory and powerfully chasing away melancholy."

Interesting flower. Almost like a crab with its pincher claws out in defense. Love the medicinal part too. I could use that at times. Aloha
