Description

Needs to be seen full size for the scale. Today's post I step way back, even further than I did in Space. Here we take in an entire urban landscape in one panoramic vision. Here we see some of the oldest areas, on the waterfront, and some of the newest in the center. I took in old commerce, the docks and barges and the new, the financial district. This is the City of London seen from the Docklands on the Southbank of the Thames. The City of London is a small area, just over 1 square mile, in the center of Greater London. It is the core of the metro area that we think of as London; its boundaries have been stable since the medieval period. It was founded as a Roman city in about AD 47. Today it is a major financial center, ranking even above New York City in terms of global financial markets. However, if you want to see this sweeping view intact you better get there before 2014, for a suite of new highrise towers will then penetrate the skyline, altering London's character forever. It is a bit sad, but I for one would rather see cities grow up rather than out. Previous London

a stunning capture and a sad tale friend...... my first impression of London was one with people living in cardboard boxes on main walkways underneath towering office blocks - overly expensive parking and mind numbing traffic delays....... but then I am a foreigner and without local knowledge I see the side that you may know how to avoid. The history of the place is amazing as is the architecture and I do feel sad when a place loses it's feel or look.... I come from a steel industry town and when the steelworks closed down we lost an amazing steampunkish landscape forever....yes we lost the polluted waterways and yes our air improved....but visually it was a great loss.... I like this capture alot for the contrast of design within

Excellent cityscape! It's true London is changing pretty fast. Each time I visit,it has move on. After a few days in London, when I come back to Paris I have the feeling to be in a sleeping country town.:)

Oh its been so long since I´ve been there.... I bet it already changed a lot. I don´t think that conical mirrored tower was there 19 years ago. Great shot, Roxy.

This is a wonderful panoramic shot, and reminds me of when I visited my youngest son some years ago when he lived in a flat there, and in fact had lived there for some years. We used to love to stand on the roof of the flats and just gaze at this amazing scene, I am saddened to learn that the skyline will be altered, and I hope Prince Charles is allowed to oversee all of that because he has such an eye for these things and I know how much he hates new buildings that are ugly amongst the old characteristic ones that have been there for centuries. I hope the architects are good and embrace the character of the old and mix with the new. Thanks for the share, hugs Jane xx p.s.If you would like to see a matte painting of an amazing London rooftop scene which is still a lot of London as it is still, an amazing artist Raphael Lacoste painted an superb artwork here it is, hope you enjoy, I love this - http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=137&t=604017
