Description

In addition to their somewhat extreme method of jurisprudence, the Batak are known for their distinct form of architecture. Houses are built on stilts, a practical idea in an area of the world subject to heavy tropical rain storms. Some say the roof of a Batak house represents the prow of a ship. Others see the horns of a water buffalo. Each house is adorned with fanciful animal figures designed to keep away evil spirits. There was a musical group at the Duma Sari Hotel that played traditional Batak songs for the guests. My favorite was Asing Sing So (The Batak Boat Song). It can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDCenGkgA5U The translation is a bit off but you get the idea.

Yes, I get the idea. Obviously, he's a newlywed. I imagine there is another version to be sung a few years later, in which he asks to go in the opposite direction. LOL Beautiful place, with so interesting architechture and so many traditions. Excellents captures.

Regardless of the inspiration, the lines of the finished product are graceful and joyful! Love that swoop.

It's quite common to see houses on stilts, on the South Pacific Islands, even here in OZ we do it, it's especially necessary when the banks of the Tweed river break. But what a wonderful roof design! - our friends from Samoa and New Zealand have a similar ones. BB

Beautiful architecture! It certainly does look like a boat and you climb up underneath the house to enter. I could live there easily. It's very beautiful. What an interesting trip this must have been. Great shots.

Many of the houses on the Gulf Coast are on stilts. I heard on NPR about houses in the river flood plains of the US that are being built with the bottom floor a kind of open garage designed to be easily cleaned of mud if the river rises. Beautiful and gracefully shaped buildings, with very pretty and elaborate decorations. I like seeing the close-up of them. Excellent captures! Nice song.
