Description
As I've mentioned, I've been working on some German X-Craft, aircraft some of which saw limited service and some that never made it passed the mock up stage (thank God!).I had already descided to do one render from the set and this is it.It started out as a launch tower and a Bachem Ba349 'Natter' being prep'd for launch...and it kind of got out of hand :-) (Best viewed full size).
The Bachem Ba 349 Natter (English: Viper, Adder) was a point-defence rocket powered interceptor, which was to be used in a very similar way to a manned surface-to-air missile. After vertical take-off, which eliminated the need for airfields, the majority of the flight to the Allied bombers was to be controlled by an autopilot. The primary mission of the relatively untrained pilot, perhaps better called a gunner, was to aim the aircraft at its target bomber and fire its armament of 24 Henschel Hs 217 R4M Fohm electrically fired self-stabalizing rocket shells. The pilot and the fuselage containing the rocket motor would then land under separate parachutes, while the tail section was disposable. The only manned vertical take-off flight on 1 March 1945 ended in the death of the test pilot.
Church Ruin by Dark Anvil, Figures from Vogel Einz by ThunderR, Kubelwagen by Adh3D, 6 wheel Merc and Schwimwaggen from Sketchup (I think!)
Everything else is mine.....

I think I would have passed on being a test pilot for that thing, your right, a good thing it never made it into production. Great render and model!

Well, it was a never realized crazy dream of the germans. :-)

Great one, Neil...apart from the major action, I like all the "small" dramas going on in the scene. The dogs are a great touch, as well as the figure groups in conversations and such... (Hmmm...do I get the feeling that you don't have any compunction about blowing up other peoples stuff as long as it's out of camera range? No matter, this is the only flight I gather.)

Great sceane with many nice details. Interesting bit of history, but I wonder about the practicality of such a technology.
Osper
Nice job on the whole scene! Neat litle details!

Great Scene ℑ,
T.Rex
Great going with the wide scene, many small things going on and the catastrophic test going up (and, who did it land on???)! As debbielove suggests - why just German? American and other nation's test flights (test screw-ups?) could be just as interesting (not to mention Tailspin's test flights!). Keep up the good work! :-)

poor test pilot! mind you the Nazi's used slave labour on their rocket programmes so I won't shed too many tears. Amazing render and brilliant composition- wish I had a bigger computer screen or maybe a projector!

I've always loved these type of Luftwaffe aircraft ever since seeing a 163 Komet at the Imperial War Museum in the mid 70s. Good work!
