Description
The Ponce de Leon Hotel was an exclusive hotel in St. Augustine, Florida, built by millionaire developer, railroad magnate and Standard Oil co-founder Henry M. Flagler and completed in 1887. The Ponce de Leon Hotel was designed in the Spanish Renaissance style and was the first edifice, in the United States, to be constructed entirely of poured concrete (cement, sand and coquina shells). The hotel also was wired for electricity at the onset, with the power being supplied by DC generators supplied by Flagler's friend Thomas Edison. The building and grounds of the hotel became a part of Flagler College in 1968.
This is the bell tower, in the corner of the main courtyard, of the old Ponce de Leon Hotel. I liked the sunset lighting. Info from Wikipedia. Best details in zoom.

WOW! That's all poured concrete? Who'd have thunk it. Okay, the ancient Romans built amazing structures (that have survived to this day) with poured concrete, but the difference between them doing it and us doing it is when we do it, it looks like crap (or a shopping mall, but then again, so many shopping malls look like crap.) I'm glad to see a molded concrete structure actually looking like a structure that is worth looking at. I love the color picked out by the setting sun as well.
