Description

At least I think it's a crocus. Captured 2/16/10. Achtung, Achtung: auntietk and npauling have correctly identified this beauty as a magnolia blossom. Many thanks, ladies!

I can't tell if it's a crocus or not, but it's awfully pretty, Harry! You're my last comment on the way out the door to London; back in 10 days with lots of shots, I hope!

durleybeachbum: If not a crocus, then what? It sure looks like one.

I don't think it's a Crocus either. Perhaps another picture or two will allow someone to identify it. Really beautiful flower, the foliage lookes a bit odd. Nothing I have seen before. My best guess at this point would be some kind of Rain Lily.

I don't think it is a crocus either but it looks very like our Magnolia blossom. A beautiful capture and it doesn't really matter what it is called, one can still admire its beauty.

Oh great. The lady whose garden this was planted in called it a Crocus. So now what to call it?

What a stunning shot! Gorgeous photography. This is a magnolia blossom. They grow on bushes (or trees, if the bush is allowed to grow), and they have a lovely scent. You can easily view them at approximately eye level. There are over 200 varieties, so don't count on them all looking exactly like this! There are basically two colors ... creamy white, and this gorgeous pink-and-cream version. The middle of the flower is VERY fancy. If you've got more images that show the center part, you'll see what I mean. Crocus flowers (the plural for crocus is croci, by the way) grow from bulbs, and their blooms are quite close to the ground. The entire flower, stem and all, is rarely over about three or four inches tall. You would need to get down on your hands and knees to obtain this angle on a crocus. They tend to come out early in the year ... even in January, and even pushing up through the snow ... and they're mostly purple and/or white, but occasionally yellow. They have no scent that I know of. The center of a crocus flower is quite simple. If you Google magnolia and crocus, you'll have a much better idea of what they each look like. Hope that helps!

I have a Portwine Magnolia bush/shrub in my garden and this comes pretty close to it - did you realise Harry, that they expel the most divine perfume towards late afternoon/evening, try a walking past there in the evening - you'd be surprised! If they don't, well what can I say? ours do anyway ... what a beautiful image, BB

I've got a picture of myself (My dad took it with my camera.) sitting on a branch of a very large magnolia tree in Arkansas. Magnolia is the state flower of my birth state, Louisiana. There's a very nice pic of the inside of a magnolia here: http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek030601.html Excellent capture! Beautiful color and detail. I like the soft glow around the blossom too.
