Hi everybody,
My name is Dana Pommet and my wife’s name is Josephine. I was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1942, and except for a tour in the Navy, lived there for most of my life. I retired to Delray Beach, Florida in December 2000. We love to travel and photography goes hand and hand with that. I went digital about 5 years ago and started posting November 22, 2008. I have met so many wonderful people on RR and that makes this whole process so much more interesting than just posting photos. Thanks for all the comments and keep them coming.
Update  January 2012: After hiding and denying my mild Dyslexia, for most of my professional life, and now fighting with its advancement – I want to thank you all for putting up with my poor typing skills and spelling problems. I know that my spell checker hates me and I now depend completely on audio books rather then actually reading printed books.  Life marches on!  ÂÂ

I, too, love history. You are so fortunate to have visited Gettysburg. We trace our family history, and have ancestors that fought in the Civil War, both North and South. Great to have a small piece of history.

Nice presentation with all the POV's Dad! Trying to recall the conical design. Thought it's improvement to be for accuracy and a little easier to load.

A fascinating bit of history, Dana - nice capture of it! The thought of getting hit by one of these just sends shivers up my spine. No matter where you get hit, you are out of action - most likely for good.

Gettysburg: my ancestor was Gen Dan Siclkes, of the Orchard "fame". There were others there, mostly from New York and New Jersey. On the other side, some family were from Texas and South Carolina. For our family, it truly was kin against kin. I visited our land near Hannible, Missouri. On it is a tree, under which an ancestor of the Confederate Militia Cavalry was shot dead and buried. The tree was still standing several decades ago. Now that was a touching moment. I own a real Model 1861 Springfield rifle. Back when it was not worth so much, I used to shoot it. I am very acquainted with it's habits, accuracy and hitting power. It was a delight to shoot.

I would like to see Gettysburg too, as it holds ny interest as well. That's a .50 cal bullet and packs a mean punch. You have to fire one of these to appreciate it. Made my old 44-40 seem like a toy.

Great collage of this tiny part of history. I think it is sad to think of the many lives lost in battles around the World. Lots of young men never had the change to create a future life...Hope the world become more grown up some day...

Excellent photos of this bullet. That was a huge casuality rate though, with so many young men denied the pleasure of growing up and reaching their potential. It is really sad.

SUPERB photo and narrative, dana! A DIFFICULT time in OUR American history, indeed! .... It's hard enough to deal with WAR with ANOTHER country .... LOTS of GOOD folks LOST .... SIGHS.

History in the raw, there must be 'billions' of these scattered around the world, yet one on it's own is a far more powerful image. This is the more valuable historically as you know when and where it's from. Not very likely to be a 'killer' as deformation was a prime objective on impact, indicated by the cavity in the base. The sort of thing that is picked up and relegated to the back of a drawer, so good to see this one in the hands of someone who can appreciate and share how special this is.....great post, thanks Dana..
