Description

The Southwest Lumber Mills 2-6-6-2 compound Mallet #12 was originally built in 1929 by Baldwin as a split saddle tank, with two water tanks, one on either side of the boiler, for Hammond Lumber Company, where it was numbered #6. In 1931 the company renumbered it #12. After 22 years in service for Hammond Lumber and its subsidiaries in Oregon and California, #12 was sold in 1951 to the Arcata & Mad River Railroad in Blue Lake, CA. In 1956, it was moved to Southwest Lumber Mills in Arizona and worked for another nine years before retiring in 1960. The locomotive's saddle tanks were removed by Southwest in 1959. #12 was donated to Coconino County by Southwest Lumber Company in 1960 and went on display in Coconino County Park in Flagstaff until 1994. It was then moved to the Flagstaff Pioneer Museum where it has been on display since. This picture was taken on 8 October 2011, Sig...
