Anyone who has struggled directly or indirectly with substance abuse (and thank God, I haven’t had to do either) knows how truly scary it can be. Mayfield’s cautionary tale was the signature song for Superfly, the hit soundtrack from the hit movie. And he rightfully identified the people who profit from various facets of the illegal drug trade as real life monsters. J.B.’s “King Heroin” would qualify as a rap song, even though it was recorded almost a decade before the genre entered the music mainstream. By far the most tragic character in this theme is the wretched fellow who goes off to serve his country and comes home with a destructive habit. Major Tom wasn’t the first—and he won’t be the last.
