Description

The majestic Roosevelt Elk were once nearly extinct, by 1925 the number of Roosevelt elk in California was as little as 15. One of the last elk herds was located here in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The protection of the habitat in the park and surrounding areas has allowed the population to become more than a thousand today. Was coming off of Gold Bluff Beach when I came over the dunes and interrupted their dinning. They looked over, sized me up, decided they were bigger than me and continued grazing. :~) Took this image with my only lens at the time, a 105mm zoom, and even then I was a little closer than one should be to these two. As with many wild animals, unpredictable behavior may occur. So giving a wide berth is always recommended. It is not a pretty sight seeing 700 - 1,100 pounds of muscle and antlers coming at you. Speaking of antlers you can see that the Elk on the right has been rubbing the velveteen off of his. To the kind souls that leave their mark whether a comment, rating, or save the image as a fav, you are very much appreciated, thank you!!! Thank you all that viewed my last image below. thumb_2261613.jpg

Beautiful capture, and nice write up. In 2001 25 elk were released into the Smoky Mountains, than later 27 more, I have been up to the area where they are 3 times, and it is a beautiful area, and they are very impressive to watch, and yes dangerous or can be, I never realized all that until talking to some rangers they said they would rather encounter black bears, there are now 140 elk in that area. Thanks for sharing your photos of these beautiful animals

Just yesterday in the news: Vietnam loses fight to save its rare Javan rhinoceros. It seems the Vietnamese were unsuccessful in stopping the poachers. They are now extinct. This is not only a superb image but it also helps to remind us what people can do when they really try. Thanks for sharing.
