Description

The Rufous Beaked Snake is a species of colubrid from West Africa. It is named for its hooked snout, which it uses to dig burrows, and reddish-brown back scales. It hunts small animals during the day with the help of its venomous bite. It is large and stout, with males reaching a maximum length of 3.6 feet (1.1 meters) and females a bit shorter. It has a shortened skull, as with all beaked snakes, giving it a clear distinction between its head and body, as well as a dark brown eyestripe running down the side of its head. Its eyes are large with round pupil. Its belly is cream or yellowish-white. Diurnal animals, Rufous Beaked Snakes hunt small animals, including other snakes, but stay in burrows during the hottest part of the day. In the summer, females lay 8-17 cylindrical eggs. The snake's venom, one of its components of which is a neurotoxin called rufoxin, causes hypotension and circulatory shock in small mammals, but is not dangerous to humans. Info from Wikipedia. Such a gorgeous creature! I've always liked snakes and feel that they've really received a bum rap, all because they're so not human. Well, it's impossible to anthropomorphize a snake, after all; I mean, they don't look anything like us so they must be bad, right? No, I don't think that, personally, but humans do. I mean, pick any group of "us" and "them" and you get the same thing...okay, and it doesn't help that some snakes possess the ability to bite poison into their prey, and have no problem with biting anyone (or anything) that scares the living daylights out of them before making a quick exit! All of that aside, I happen to adore snakes, though they're not the brightest lights in the harbor, in terms of brain usage. Oh well...they're still lovable. This is a great shot and I've never seen a snake such as this. I love the expression he seems to be wearing: a rather stern: don't-bother-me-I'm-busy sort of expression. Great colors.
