Description

The Strangler Fig is the common name for a number of tropical and subtropical plant species, including some banyans and unrelated vines, included among many other species – the Ficus Aurea, also known as the Florida Strangler Fig. They all share a common "strangling" growth habit that is found in many tropical forest species, particularly of the genus Ficus. This growth habit is an adaptation for growing in dark forests where the competition for light is intense. These plants begin life as epiphytes, when their seeds, often bird-dispersed, germinate in crevices atop other trees. These seedlings grow their roots downward and envelop the host tree while also growing upward to reach into the sunlight zone above the canopy. An original support tree can sometimes die, so that the strangler fig becomes a "columnar tree" with a hollow central core. Info from Wikipedia. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

WOW, what a very interesting tree (ficus). I do love this many legs, in a wonderful kind of creepy sort of shape. This gives the impression that he begins to walk, and he sneaks up to you. :D A splendid find/shot, and interesting info.

This is very interesting Dana...I've learned something...or reinforced some things I thought I knew about trees that spring to life atop other trees... We've seen a lot of this in the very wet rain forests near the coast in Northern California and Washington. You've inspired me to look for an example among my 2011 files.
