Description

Closeup of the rusted anchor at Bodega Bay. I was wondering how old this object could be? It looks like it had some heavy use & abuse. July 07, 2011

Neat photo. That is a fine anchor that looks like it has undergone proper preservation at some period in the past. It appears to have the characteristics of a Rogers anchor made sometime after 1813...when the arms were first formed in one piece, and were pivoted at the crown on a bolt passing through the forked shank. (There's a good wiki on the history of the anchor).

Did you know that if you sculpt a Tootsie Roll and dust the finished product with powdered sugar (just a little bit) it takes on this color and overall texture? Don't ask how or why I'd know anything about Tootsie Roll sculpture: we'll just leave it at: I was young and bored and didn't want to eat the Tootsie Rolls in question. Once you get them to hand-warmth, Tootsie Rolls are very easy to mold into shapes. And that's the first thing I thought of when I saw this shot. Rust and waxy chocolate have more in common than most people probably want to admit, which is precisely why a really cool, rusty anchor immediately reminded me of chocolate product! And as for this shot, I really like the crop and your focus on the business end of the anchor. There are some wonderful details to see and it looks as if this anchor is still seeing some type of use/activity as it seems smooth and maybe polished a bit (probably coated with preservatives.) This is a great shot. It makes a wonderful abstract, too.

This is an exellent rusty texture example that is weather and wind worn smooth. My 8th grade English teacher would slap me silly if she ever sees that sentence. :o)
