This is quite fascinating! It's definitely a glimpse into another world, and it's rusty on top of that! I love relics like these and the rust patterns on it actually indicate that this thing once got hot. Antique irons (you know, the ones made of iron?) have the same sort of heat-induced oxidation patterns. It's a wee bit flaky and of distinctly non-Tootsie-Roll character. As I've said earlier, a particular sort of waxy chocolate product comes in this particular color, but alas, that nice flaky rust can't be imitated. Oh well... ...this is a great find and what an intriguing specimen of obsolete technology; I'm sure that whales the world over are grateful that this is no longer in use. I'm not in favor of whaling, myself, but I cannot deny the intrinsic interest this photo holds. I'd love to see more of these! This is a brilliant and informative shot.
