Description

The small town of Skykomish, Washington, in the Cascade Mountains along the original railroad route. Back in the day, long before anyone was thinking about the environment, the railroad trashed up the land here so totally that it became toxic. They're in the midst of a cleanup project they say should take about six years. Part of the project required they move some buildings out of the way and then put them back, including the historic Skykomish Hotel. You can see we caught them in the middle of the job. The hotel appears to have a new foundation, but clearly needs more work. If you're interested in the project, they post regular progress reports here: Skykomish Cleanup I took a million photos in Skykomish, and more than half of them were of the hotel. Of course you just know I'm going to make you look at a whole bunch of 'em! :)

No one in sight. It should be interesting if you come back and get another picture after the fix up to compare. Excellent job. Aloha

Titled just right... It will be fun to revisit this little town in 2-3 more years to see what they've made of it. With the toxic mess that has existed, I don't suppose the population is very big...I'll check it out:) Looking forward to more hotel shots.

Sweeping stuff under the rug, in reverse....if you 'picked' one of these buildings up and it fell to pieces, who'd get the bill?

Okay, I understand the concept of toxic land...I suspect that a particular truck=yard in Chicago has numerous toxins leeched into the soil, along with whatever happens to drip off of trains trundling by. But what really amuses me is the idea that a place would be moved, the land cleaned up, so that the place can be returned to its original location. Where do they put buildings going though that process? It there a "U-Stor-It" for buildings, somewhere? Marvelous...and in terms of this shot: I love the vanishing perspective and the kinda empty small-town look. It's nicely haunting.

Nice perspective. The hills still look pristine. Your notes remind me of Bill Steele's song 'Garbage' famously sung by Pete Seeger. In Mister Thompson's factory, they're making plastic Christmas trees Complete with silver tinsel and a geodesic stand The plastic's mixed in giant vats from some conglomeration That's been piped from deep within the earth or strip-mined from the land. And if you question anything, they say, "Why, don't you see? It's absolutely needed for the economy," oh, Garbage!
