Description
This hawk was at the same bird rehabilitation center as my recent Barn Owl posting. I liked the photo in the upper right. I am thinking now that he must have been looking at his own reflection in my lens. When I moved back, to take the rest of these photos, his posture went back to what you see in the remaining photos.
The Harris Hawk formerly known as the Bay-winged Hawk or Dusky Hawk, is a medium large bird of prey which breeds from the southwestern United States south to Chile and central Argentina. They are a popular species in falconry. The Harris Hawk is notable for its behavior of hunting cooperatively in packs, consisting of family groups while most other raptors hunt solitary. Individual Harris Hawks range in length from 18 to 30 inches (46 to 76 cm) and generally have a wingspan of about 3.6 feet (1.1 meters). They exhibit sexual dimorphism with the females being larger by about 35%. In the United States, the average weight for males is about 25 ounces (710 grams), while the female average is 36 ounces (1,020 grams). They have dark brown plumage with chestnut shoulders, wing linings, and thighs, white on the base, tip of the tail and long, yellow legs. The vocalizations of the Harris's Hawk are very harsh sounds. I love birds of prey and I have a particular fondness for Harris Hawks. When my sister and I went to a bird of prey center in Ireland, I volunteered to have one fly to me. It was amazing. Time seemed to stand still as I looked at her at close range. Lovely shots! I like the top right one too.
