Description

This is for Andrew (blinkings), who was kind enough to post a picture of a 1970 Ford Mustang BOSS 302 for me about two weeks ago that I only recently noticed. He was also nice enough to post a link to my gallery. If I was computer savvy enough to do the same for him, I'd be happy too. Anyway, thanks Andrew. And now the story of this picture: I was riding with a friend in her car when we heard the distinctive growl of a vintage American big block V8 roaring up behind us. I turned just in time to see a near mint 1963 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport 409 (6.7 litre) sailing by, and made a frantic bid for my camera. As luck would have it, the Impala was blocked in by a dawdling, elderly Honda Civic, and then the traffic signal turned red. While the Chevy's driver held the snorting beast in check like a thoroughbred straining at the starting gate, I dashed off a few quick shots. The summer sun was so bright as it reflected off the chrome and paint of the Impala that most of the seat-of-the-pants snaps I made were ruined by overexposure. This is the only one that came out reasonably well. Anyway, the signal changed, the driver of the Civic was smart enough to get out of the way, and the Chevy was launched with a speed very similar to lunar trajectory. It's always great to see one of these old beauties out for a cruise. When I was kid, garden variety Impalas were a glut on the market, but the SS 409 was already legendary even then. And the legend continues. As the Beach Boys once sang..."She's real fine/My four oooooooh niiiiiiiiiine...." Photographed on South Longwood Drive in the Beverly Hills area of Chicago on August 14, 2009.

'63 was a good year:) Like your crop Corey...it reveals a very iconic view of a classic Impala.

I always liked that stamped, textured metal stuff across the back. LOVE this shot! I saw it a little while ago when I looked over at Bill's monitor, and knew it for your work instantly. Excellent work, my friend!

Thanks dude. No link to my humble gallery needed! I've never actually driven one of these big cars. I've had 4WD's but they are different I suspect.

Hey, didn't I comment on this before? Funny. My comment just disappeared! (Note how I'm not actually admitting that I missed this post. Clever, wouldn't you say?) Anyway, since my original comment...um...disappeared...cough-cough I'll just re-post it. What a shot! I really like the crop of this and the whole automotiveness of it. I'm really taken by the sky reflected in all of its glory in that rear window, and hints of that same sky-color showing up on other sky-facing surfaces. This is one of those cars with character that you're so good at spotting, and it serves as a perfect dedication too. This is a gorgeous shot!

Delightful story. I love these old cars. Not just the 409, but many chrome and glass steeds of yesteryear. I have had the fortune to own a 59 chevy.. the one with the horizontal fins, and also a 67 mustang, which will forever hold a piece of my heart. It is not limited to 4 wheels either.. My 65 Harley is a part of my soul. There have been others, but these 3 each are parts of my being...
