Description

Outside Aurora, Illinois, on the way into Chicago. After a long afternoon of driving, we got off the tollway at Aurora and found a sandwich shop. The guy who served us was great. My favorite quote? "Wow - you came all the way from Seattle to have lunch at a Jersey Mike's in Aurora, Illinois. That's really sad." It's all perspective, I guess. I told him we were on our way into the city, but Chicago held no charm for him. I can't exactly remember, but I believe his goal was to get to New Orleans. Hmmmmm ... maybe that was the guy at Roti's on Washington. Dang. After a while it all runs together. We met lots of young men working in food service who were dissatisfied with where they were and thought someplace else would be better. I've seen a quote (was it something Arthur said?) that basically says: If you can't see the beauty around you in your home town, what will you see if you travel to some exotic place? It's true. Every exotic city, every travel destination, every fabulous adventure trip, is populated by impatient people (including those young men serving food) who think life would be better if they could only get out of where they are now. So. We left Aurora, Illinois where the fettered and downtrodden live, and headed into Chicago ... our very own adventure travel destination! I took this picture on the outskirts of Aurora, doing 70mph or so. (Bill was driving, of course!) Do you think the people who work in that building think they need to get out and move to NYC, or do they see the photo op that is their daily environment? Travel gives me a different perspective on life, the universe and everything.

I've been to Aurora so many times, and--strangely enough--I know that building, not up close and in person, mind you, but I've passed it on the way to one dental delivery or another. There are a lot of dentists with heavy stuff working in Aurora. And now, I want to go to that sandwich shop and meet that guy and invite him on a road trip to Seattle. Just one of those things, you know! And it's funny how so many people are interested in going elsewhere, as if doing so will improve everything. Of course, there are others who simply need to move on because somebody keeps sending them not-so-subtle messages in Russian, but that's another thing all together. Anyway...I love this shot. It looks like one of those things you'd see only if you weren't from around here, especially since I have seen that particular building at least 4 or 5 times and never felt even the vaguest compulsion to photograph it: it's the familiarity of it, the context in which I've seen it...one doesn't want to photograph very much if moving a 300-pound dental chair is somehow attached to what might be photographed...but I digress. I love this photo and the lines and unexpected diagonals in it. It actually makes me wanna hop on a Metra train and head out to Aurora, just to try and get a night shot of that, but then, given Chicago's current weather, I won't be going out at night any time soon. The weather's actually warmer than normal, but the idea of going out in it (at night) is immensely unpleasant. I suspect I'll have to wait until I've gotten a sufficient amount of winter-induced cabin fever to do that. Okay, now that I've rambled on and on, I'll shut up, but WOW who ever thought Aurora could look so nice!?

A terrific composition..and taken at N miles per hour too! I do so agree with that quote, (especially as I don't do travelling!) Luckily I am content. I have not yet explored every bit of my own conurbation even, let alone the county. Anbd as for most of England...

A wonderful shot at that speed and yes I do wonder sometimes what is going on behind walls, whether people are happy or living a sad life!

Perspective - my realisation is that I will never see all that is out there in the world - or photograph it. I need to enjoy all that I do see and experience. Seeing the world through other people's lens does help. Sharing my view helps others... In this way we do .... overlap. Clive

Nice lines/angles, and I can't believe this is from a moving vehicle; you're good at not getting motion blur! When I hear Aurora I immediately think "Wayne's World, Wayne's World, party time, excellent"

Great drive by shot Tara, with no blur on that wiring! Good work! Allot of Americans think its wonderful here in the U.K, but once they get here they realise that there are more ......how shall I say.....not British born....living here, be it legally, through some E.U inflicted law, or illegally.. About which NO British Government seems to want to do anything about.. Its not the grand British Island it used to be anymore I'm afraid.. Same as anywhere I guess...except in the mountain, surrounded by forest in the backwoods of Maine.. Perfect! Rob

Wise and true observations, Tara. When I stayed at Lake Toba in Sumatra I often thought how wonderful it would be to live in this paradise. There was a young woman who worked at the restaurant next to my hotel who couldn't wait to leave paradise and join her married sister in Switzerland. Nice capture of what appears to be a jumble of a child's blocks.

Excellent photo especially as you were travelling so fast! slow down Bill lol. Very interesting intro and it certainly does seem like a case of the other man's grass is always greener attitude that guy had, guess some people can never be happy. hugs Jane xx

IMHO far too many people have a dream that all there cares and woes will go away if they move...but then they find the same problems in their new locale. Sort of says, deal with yourself first...then live wherever you please. Fine photo and postwork:*

You know, it's funny in a way.... So many of us feel the draw of 'getting away' and everything will be better. I'm as guilty as anyone.. It's the same thing with photography - 'If I could just travel/move to -insert name of destination here- I could get some really great photos.' Again, I plead guilty. Thanks for the inspiration to open our eyes and appreciate what's awaiting our appreciation in our own backyards... Great capture, Tara!
