Description

Dear Friends... I am going to have to take a little break from Rendo for a few days. Tuesday afternoon, the assisted living center where my dad lives called to say that he had become extremely confused, and was making comments about possible suicide. I had to take off work early, and my aunt and I had to check him into a geriatric psychiatric center. At this time, I do not know if or when he will be able to return to his apartment. My dad has always been a strong and very sharp-minded man, however since losing his wife (my step-mom) to a stroke in 2008, he has steadily been going downhill. Although I have been expecting this for some time, it doesn't make it any easier when it finally happens, nor does it help ease the heartbreak or stem the flow of tears. It has been an emotional and exhausting day. The image in the middle is my dad, taken earlier today with my work cellphone while we waited in the ER of Centerpoint Hospital. The psychiatric center could not admit him without first being medically checked out at a regular hospital. We arrived at Centerpoint at about 3:00PM. By the time my aunt and I left him at the psychiatric center, it was approaching midnight. I will return as soon as I can. I'm not sure at the moment when I'll be back, but I will be back. Take care, my friends.

Rod... I'm only 48 and haven't had my Mom in my life since 38.... it's tough... as I read what you're going through, what your Dad is going through, all I could think of is if my Mom was alive I'd take her up to her Cabin.... Is there somewhere you can take your Dad, just the two of you and get some "Life" back in him? He needs it.... It'd be good for both of you.... it sounds like he's screaming for help, I could only imagine losing my Wife - the pain, the loneliness.... take him fishing, a strip bar, a football game - get him drunk... I think that's what I'd want from my Son - and I haven't been drunk since 2003? ...well, it's been at least 5 years, but I'd love to get drunk with my son and spend some time with him at a campfire.... just some ideas - I hope you find this useful and you do it and you create a memory like you never seen coming.

This is beautiful, Rod, how you've surrounded your father with love, spirituality and angels to watch over him when you can't be there. You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers and I will pray for his piece of mind and heart.

Rod, these words sound as if they could have been written by me. I am walking a similar path, the uncertainty, the long hours of waiting with nothing happening, the realization that western medicine is terribly ill prepared to deal with issues of the elderly. Though out paths are not the same the journey is similar enough that I am empathetic to your plight. Remember above all else to take care of yourself first, because if you don't you will not be able to take care of anyone else. It is an old saying, often forgotten in times of crises, and yet it is in times of crises thay you need to heed it the most. I let myself continue a crash at the time my Mom and Dad were going down and if not for my brother stepping in it would have been a disaster. Pay heed to your needs too. You will give up more time and space now but do not give it all away or too much, do not think "I will get it back, someday." No, keep time for yourself in this time, and you will gain time for your father as well.
