Description

Belmonte mediaeval castle , with a well known couple In one of the towers of the old part of the castle you find a wall decoration showing Don Quichote and his assistant Sancho Pancha. This was quite surprisingly, especially because the decoration was covered by graffiti. Belmonte Castle, as a mediaeval castle should look like (see my previous posting) , however on the courtyard there is something surprisingly you can’t see from the outside. At the beginning of XIX century, during the French invasion, Belmonte castle was used by the French as a jail. In the XX century the castle has been used in many movies, El Cid was one of them. Wandering around the old and the new part is such a pleasant spending of your day!! The old part of Belmonte Castle in Cuenca, Spain is a massive medieval castle in Spain. This grand bastion was built on the hill of San Cristobal, considered one of the important historical locations throughout Spain. Medieval fortress Belmonte by its impresses with the beauty of its forms - it was built in the shape of a star with six rays, each ending in an oval, tall tower. For Belmonte Castle, we can say that is one of the best and preserved specimens of Gothic medieval castles with so-called mudejar ornamentation in Arab style. South of Madrid, the capitol of Spain, you have the province of La Mancha. This area has been put on the map by Don Quichote and Sancho Pancha. In September 2011 we spent a week in this area, which is not only decorated by historical windmills, but is gifted by a large number of mediaeval Castles and Monasteries. Thanks for viewing, and your lovely words on my yesterdays posting, a special thanks for those who earmarked the image as favorite; comments are always welcome. Have a very nice day, Henk
