Description

...everywhere we went in Eastern Oregon we were never far from something named after John Day. Here's a view of one little segment of the river named after him. ...The John Day River is a tributary of the Columbia River, approximately 281 miles (452 km) long, in northeastern Oregon in the United States. Undammed along its entire length, the river is the third longest free-flowing river in the conterminous United States. ...The river was named for John Day, a member of the Astor Expedition, an overland expedition to the mouth of the Columbia River that left from St. Louis, Missouri, in 1810. Day wandered lost through this part of Oregon in the winter of 1811-12... Bill "He Who Waits" thumb_2273030.jpg

This is lovely, gentle looking country. Although 'lost' would be a bad option.

A lovely view of the countryside there; I get the same feeling I get in Wyoming, of being closer to the sky. I'd hate to be lost for a whole winter there, though...

You just taught me a new word - conterminous. Thanks for the education. And the info about the Oregon river. It looks like a nice, calm little river, but, when the snow melts! The gravel shores attest to considerable force. The colors in this photo are nice. Seems Tara needs a bit filling in on the history of some of the places you visit while on the site. :) Keep up the good work! :-)

Hell! it took me fifty years to get used to 'Continental' United States and now you come up with 'conterminous', NEVER heard that before....a trip to Google me thinks... What a great landscape, certainly a place to find peace and quiet, but 'lost' in Winter....did he survive? (conterminous, John Day....Google).There are bits of Scotland that look similar but thats like saying there are bits of New York that look like Liverpool....
